"The saturated purple-hued 2016 Reckoning checks in as 58% Syrah, 18% Malbec, 10% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, and the rest Petite Sirah and Viognier. Blackberries, smoked herbs, bacon fat, and some green olive notes all emerge from this beautifully layered, silky, concentrated effort that has no hard edges, sweet tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s one of the gems in the lineup and should easily keep for 7-8 years."

"A booming but expertly balanced wine, this blend of 54% Syrah, 18% Petite Sirah, 18% Zinfandel and 10% Grenache shows aromas of black currant, black olive, black cherry, sweet woody spice and powdered hot cocoa. Elegant mocha and cappuccino notes thrive on the palate, which is brightened by penetrating acidity. It boasts perfectly polished tannins and ripe fig flavors, with a flash of dark chocolate on the finish."

"ONX's current releases are quite delicious and complex. This rich, multi-layered blend of 63% Syrah, 21% Malbec, 11% Grenache and 5% Petite Sirah shows blackened plum, blueberry, soy, porcini mushroom and pepper notes on the nose. On the palate, blackberry, charred lamb and rosemary flavors are the story, framed by upright structure and powerful acidity."

"One of the standouts in the lineup is the 2016 Syrah Fiery Nights, which was co-fermented with 5% Viognier and aged 19 months in 50% new 500-liter barrels. It boasts a rocking bouquet of gamy meats, bacon fat, mulled dark fruits, and tapenade. This inky colored effort has beautiful purity of fruit, good acidity, and ripe tannins, all making for a brilliant Paso Robles Syrah that’s going to drink nicely for at least 7-8 years."

“A completely different beast, the 2016 Syrah Noble Intrigue comes all from the Bien Nacido Vineyard outside of Santa Maria and was brought up in 50% new French oak barrels. It has a spectacular bouquet of blackberry and cassis fruits intermixed with notes of olive tapenade, salty minerality, and subtle oak. It’s young and unevolved but just loaded with potential.”

Caliber

  • 2016

    • Jeb Dunnuck, 91

"A blend of 55% Malbec and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Caliber sports a deep purple color as well as textbook Malbec blue fruits, sappy herbs, mint, and spring flowers. With excellent purity of fruit, a fresh, lively texture, and outstanding balance, it should drink nicely through 2026, if not longer."

"This blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Malbec begins with a very smooth nose of baked plums, toasted bread, coffee, vanilla and barbecue char. The palate is approachable and easy to enjoy, with flavors of black cherry, milk chocolate and baking spice. Both the tannins and acidity are low and hiding in the background."

"This power-packed blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Malbec offers super ripe cassis, fudge, vanilla bean and burnt coffee aromas. That coffee element carries over to the lush and softly structured palate, melding with blueberry, caramel and pork fat flavors, a meaty spice note adding to the deliciousness."

Black Orchid

  • 2016

    • Jeb Dunnuck, 91

"Checking in as all Petite Sirah, the 2016 Black Orchid is another saturated purple-colored effort that has medium to full body, a straight, focused texture, terrific purity, and outstanding notes of blackberry and cassis fruits, toasted spice, graphite, and ground pepper. It’s a touch straightforward, yet I love its purity of fruit as well as its texture."

"For a variety that's typically plush and jammy, this is a very savory spin. Charred fruit aromas interweave with oregano, leather and maduro cigar on the nose. Sandalwood, coffee and roast beef flavors arise on the palate, where a core of blueberry fruit is wrapped in polished tannins."

It’s fairly nimble on the palate given the bombastic nose, with balanced flavors of blackberry, vanilla and orange zest proving quite the crowd-pleaser."

"Dark purple fruit is upstaged by the strong umami character on the nose of this blend of 41% Syrah, 32% Mourvèdre and 27% Grenache, reminiscent of soy, shiitake mushroom and beef jerky. There is a rustic and gamy quality to the dark berry-laced palate, with meat, leather and spice qualities, lifted by a touch of licorice."

"The 2014 Level 22 is a seriously good red that's made from an eclectic mix of 45% Petite Sirah, 33% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre and 10% Grenache. Full-bodied, elegant, layered and with fabulous polish to its tannin, it delivers tons of richness in its cassis, tobacco leaf, olive and wild herb aromas and flavors. Aged 18-19 months in French oak puncheons, there are just under 500 cases of this beauty to go around, but it's well worth checking out."

"Another beauty is the 2014 Mad Crush. It's a perfumed, Grenache-dominated blend (there's 19% Tempranillo, 18% Malbec and smaller amounts of Mourvedre and Zinfandel) that exhibits classic notes of kirsch, truffle, olives, spice and sweet black cherries on the nose. "This bottling offers much of the richness and fruit-forward character of Paso Robles. Accessible aromas of black cherry, vanilla ice cream, black-currant juice and licorice lead into a juicy palate. It's very likable and hedonistic."
